Full surround, latest formats
The RX-V685 offers the entire range of surround formats, including the latest up-and-over Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, which tear the roof right off your listening room. Seven discrete channels of powerful, clean amplification (plus dual line-level subwoofer outputs) are packed right in for 7.2 capability out of the box. And if you don’t need all seven in your main room, you can control a separate second listening zone elsewhere in your house.
MusicCast expands your wireless world
Speaking of elsewhere in the house, MusicCast, Yamaha’s trademarked multi-room Wi-Fi listening system, gives you the option of sending audio from your receiver or other sources (home network or online) to virtually any room in your house – or outside if you so desire. And the newest enhancement, MusicCast Surround, means there are no more wires to trip over when you turn your MusicCast speakers, into surrounds (a MusicCast Subwoofer is coming later this year).
Down with streaming
MusicCast opens up the whole wide Wi-Fi world of cloud streaming services, with simple app control (MusicCast Controller available for Android and Apple iOS). Spotify Connect, Pandora, TIDAL, Deezer, SiriusXM and more, plus thousands of free Internet radio stations, are right at your fingertips. Hook into your home network to stream your own music collection. Or beam songs directly from phone or pad using Bluetooth, with Yamaha’s proprietary Compressed Music Enhancer making mobile music sound better than ever. (Incidentally, the V685’s Bluetooth is two-way, which means you can send the sound wirelessly to your favorite headset.)
HDMI options to spare
The V685 sports seven HDMI connections. With five inputs you can connect your disc player, game system, cable box and more without running out of room. And dual outputs mean that you can send a second signal to a projector or a TV set in another room. What’s more, all seven of the connections support full 4K pass-through with upscaling to make even standard signals look their best on the latest screens.
Pictures worth a thousand words
Full Ultra HD sources look phenomenal through the RX-V685. All the ports support the latest protocols for broadcast, video streaming and discs, including Dolby Vision, HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma, which expand video dynamic range and palette for more vivid colors and greater detail in both bright and shadowy scenes.
Vinyl nirvana and digital delights
Yamaha never forgets its musical roots, which stretch way back to its first musical instruments in 1887. You’ll find a full array of analog inputs, including a phono hookup for your treasured album collection, plus composite and component video, and line-level audio inputs in front and back. If you’re more into bits and bytes, you get four assignable digital jacks, two optical and two coaxial, and front-panel USB. Plus top-quality DAC circuitry turns those bytes into sweet music, whether the files are MP3, WAV, high-definition ALAC or FLAC or any of the other formats in streaming’s alphabet soup.
Tuned to your room – and your preferences
Yamaha’s Parametric Acoustic Optimizer with Reflected Sound Control (there’s a mouthful – let’s just say YPAO!) automatically tunes the sound to your listening environment. Just set the included microphone at your listening position, and the RX-V685 measures and adjusts frequency response, time delay, reflectivity and volume of each channel to squeeze the best sound out of your speakers and room acoustics.
Bring the concert hall home with Cinema DSP 3D
The V685 doesn’t quite read your mind. But if you dream of being transported to a concert hall, stadium or intimate jazz club, DSP will get you there. Yamaha is a pioneer in the creation of virtual spaces through Digital Soundfield Processing, taking detailed measurements in real venues and programming the data right into its microprocessors. Cinema DSP 3D offers pinpoint location of sound effects, transforms your room into any number of locations, and gives you full control of the scale of the sound space. Combine up to eight favorite sources with DSP settings and save them in convenient Scene buttons on the front plate and remote.
Simple setup, app control
The more feature-rich a unit is, the more difficult it can be to get just right. But Yamaha makes the process seamless. First, an app-based AV Setup Guide takes you through the initial hookup and adjustment process. Connections and settings are available through on-screen menus, a full-function remote, or the Yamaha AV Controller app (free, for iOS and Android). The MusicCast Controller app (also for iOS and Android) is integrated with Amazon’s amazing Alexa, which makes music as simple as “Alexa, play Misty for me.”

Two HDMI Outputs
Since the RX-V685 has two HDMI outputs, simultaneous connection to a TV and video projector is possible. Or you can add an additional TV in a common area like a kitchen or patio to watch the same content in two different rooms. HDMI Out 2 will carry an HDMI audio signal to the second TV to provide sound.
This feature, also known as Intelligent Amp Assign, allows users to enjoy stereo sound in a second room. When Zone 2 is turned on, the two surround back channels in a 7.1-channel system will be redirected to the two speakers in Zone 2, while giving the Main Zone 5.1 channels of power. Thanks to this feature, there’s no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the AV receiver.
Enjoy music from your vinyl collection through the phono input terminal.
